Mr Mortensen had a sea going career from 1971 to 1983, mostly in general cargo, containers and bulk ships. During this time he made trips to Greenland and to the Antarctic alongside working in several Danish companies which included Dansk-Fransk, East Asiatic Company, Ove Skou, J. Lauritzen and DFDS.
In 1979 he was awarded a Master’s and served as a deck officer in EAC until 1983 on containerships and con-bulkers. He then studied at Helsingør, Denmark’s Technical University where he graduated as a Naval Architect in 1987. Mr Mortensen then worked in the Basic Design Department of Burmeister & Wain Shipyard later becoming Head of the Department in 1994.During this period in his career he participated in approximately 25 trial trips basically in charge of ballast and cargo operations. Furthermore he had a close relationship with both owner representatives as well as class surveyors.
From 1996 onwards he was employed by BIMCO as as technical consultant and in 2002 became Head of the Marine Department. The work at BIMCO’s Marine Department is primarily focused on following and influencing the development of new rules as well as amending existing rules, with particular emphasis on IMO regulations. Bimco also run an inquiry service where members can get hot-line assistance on technical ship questions. Mr Mortensen is also involved with classification work, e.g. as a member of the technical committees of ClassNK and the Korean Register. Moreover and Vice Chairman of the IACS QSCS Advisory Committee.
