About Lloyd’s Register

Lloyd's Register works around the world to assess and certify ships, systems and facilities to improve quality and increase safety. We work with ship yards, owners and operators to provide innovative solutions that help improve performance in ship design, construction and operation. We lead the developments that make lives safer and help preserve the environment. In the area of propulsion and emissions, we have teams dedicated to researching technical problems with a view to improving the Rules. One of our roles is to provide sophisticated technical investigations services to owners, operators and yards, and to help deliver cost-effective and technically sound solutions to propulsion and emissions problems. Key to the service we offers is Lloyd’s Register EMEA’s Technical Investigations capability.

Over the years, we have investigated thousands of failures and amassed a wealth of technical experience and expertise. For example, in the area of new propulsion systems, such as podded propulsors, a result of operational and other experience, Lloyd’s Register has been able to issue Rules for the safe design, construction and operation of such devices. Interest has been particularly focused on azimuthing podded propulsors and their radial and thrust bearings. The premature failure of such bearings can lead to multi-million-dollar repairs and related costs, so understanding and confirming their integrity is of great importance. Lloyd's Register’s work in this area has demonstrated that systems, such as large, modern, high-power podded propulsors, need practical measurement systems to confirm their integrity in service.

For gaining an understanding of, and confidence in, operational performance enables optimisation of future maintenance. In the area of emissions, Lloyd's Register provides certification for compliance with MARPOL 73/78, Annex VI, the Regulations for the Preventing of Air Pollution from Ships. It requires all ships to obtain an International Air Pollution Prevention (IAPP) certificate, whilst Regulation 13 requires new or modified marine diesel engines to be issued with an Engine International Air Pollution Prevention (EIAPP) certificate. Lloyd's Register can carry out the surveys for both the IAPP and EIAPP certification. Our certification is recognised by the majority of flag administrations. The EIAPP and IAPP certification may be carried out at ports, shipyards, and manufacturing locations world wide. It is our experience that reconciling test and analysis results often leads to increased understanding and it is through such analysis and measurement that our investigators continue to deliver valuable insights into materials and system behaviour.

For Lloyd’s Register, life matters.
