Fitted to over 500 commercial ships, Thordon seawater lubricated propeller shaft bearing systems eliminate oil leakage from stern seals (no pollution risk), provide excellent operational and bearing wear performance as well as offering lower in-service costs. The seawater is taken from the sea, pumped through the stern tube bearings and returns to the sea. The seawater enters the forward section of the stern tube just aft of the seal. The seawater passes through the forward and then aft bearing prior to re-entering the sea. The quality of the seawater supplied to the bearing is critical in ensuring long wear life. To ensure that abrasives are removed from the seawater supply, a Thordon Water Quality Package is used. Use of seawater lubricated bearings eliminates the aft seal, as well as the storage, sampling and disposal of oil. The potential impact of stern tube oil pollution is zero. The Thordon COMPAC Stern Tube Bearing System is guaranteed to meet Classification Society stern tube bearing wear specifications for 15 years or Thordon Bearings Inc. will supply new bearings free of charge. The bearing guarantee is available for commercial newbuild vessels with shaft diameters of 300mm (12") or greater and COMPAC bearings enclosed in stern tubes .
